Chapter 21

Bobby went home, leaving the two men in the garage to figure it out. Limping and exhausted, he needed to rest.

At the house the note from his mother was like gold.

Doing some volunteer work, there’s food in the fridge.

He wasn’t really up for any conversation right now. It was only three o'clock but he went upstairs and made it to his bed in time to aim for the pillow.

When he woke up hungry, he had a shower and ate a good meal.

Sitting out on the deck he tried to get his brain around everything that was going on. Did this crazy journey finally have a purpose? How in the hell do we get Barnes home? Where was he? Could we really do anything?

It was getting complicated, because the truck was wilder every time they started it up. Would it take anymore? Then there were the battles, he’d been hurt the last two runs. What was next? Now to add more intrigue, there was a brother. Who and where was he? How did he fit into this?

Bobby knew none of this was his real problem. The problem was really Suzanne. He’d been thinking about her whenever he wasn’t thinking about the Spitfire. He didn’t know where his shyness and hesitation went, but he knew he wanted to see her. Somewhere in the back of his mind he wanted to see that Digger again too. For a different reason.

He winced on his way to the Camaro, damn his leg hurt. Backing out onto the highway, the early evening looked good for a country run. He headed south of town and popped in a ZZ Top CD.

The air flowing through the open windows soothed his head. He’d been thinking too hard. It always came back to the same ending. He had to go back up and hope Barnes led the way. It was that simple.

Coming up to Suzanne’s road, he decided not to turn off. It wasn’t a nerves thing this time. He just wanted to work the war thing over until he’d got it straight. Punching the throttle, he let the 406 deliver its power. The trees and fields flew by as he forgot about time and just let the car float down the road.

When he saw the pair of cars on the side of the road up ahead in the distance, he slowed, wondering if there was a problem. He got a bad feeling as he got closer and recognised the Corvette. Bobby slowed even more, wanting to get a good look at what was going on as he drove past.

The Vette was parked crooked in front of the other car, blocking it. Bobby did a quick look around and didn’t see any of Digger’s buddies. That was good. He noticed girls in the car, they weren’t getting out. It looked like Digger was trying to force his way in.

He slowed to a stop right beside them. Realizing the girls looked scared, he put the car in first and shut it down.
